Economics of Fisheries and Aquaculture

چکیده
Archaeological evidence indicates that fishing was one of the earliest human production activities. Early fishing seems to have been mainly hunting and gathering along shores and inlets with fish farming emerging somewhat later in time. Capture fisheries expanded rapidly in the 19 and 20 centuries AD reaching the peak annual production of over 90 million metric tonnes in the early 1990s. Since then, there has been little or no increase in capture fishery production. By contrast, fish farming production has grown very fast since the 1970s and continues to do so. Currently it accounts for over third of global fish production and close to half of the production for direct human consumption.

متن کاملOf Sea Lice and Superfood: A Comparison of Regional and National News Media Coverage of Aquaculture
As wild fisheries decline, aquaculture, or the cultivation of species in fresh and salt water, will provide the majority of seafood consumed worldwide. Given that aquaculture is an increasingly critical food “technology”—with implications for public opinion formation—we apply theory of social function systems and sustainability to a U.S. news media content analysis. We examine coverage of aquac...

متن کاملInland Fisheries and Aquaculture: A Synergy for Sustainable Food Fish Production
Inland capture fisheries and aquaculture have a number of divergent as well as overlapping relationships. In general, fishers are hunter/gatherers and socio-culturally quite distinct from fish farmers. The essential components of these cultures influence the way they view their respective environments and its resources. Institutionally, fisheries output is often controlled by managing the fishe...
متن کاملAquaculture and Capture Fisheries: a Conceptual Approach toward an Integrated Economic-ecological Analysis
& This study presents a framework for analyzing the interactions between aquaculture and capture fisheries in the context of ecosystem-based management. We extends a model of the economic and ecological systems in coastal New England by incorporating an aquaculture sector in a computable general equilibrium (CGE) model and by examining the forage fish and aquaculture link in a marine food web. ...
